The joys of decorating in a one bedroom flat

This Christmas our flat was once again plunged into chaos as we started to decorate our bedroom In a one bedroom flat whichever room we decide to decorate needs to be moved into the the remaining rooms. At the weekend our bedroom went from this:

to this:

Our wardrobe is in the hall, our mattress and guest mattress are in the livingroom and our chest of drawers are in the kitchen. Making our dining nook  our dressing room:

And our Livingroom our bedroom:

It is not something we could do for long, and already it is starting to drive me mad as we are back at work and getting up and ready is a is a bit of a nightmare. But on New Years Day when we had a bit of a hangover and I had a cold it was absolutely amazing, we spent all day snuggled up watching Breaking Bad on Netflix. But it gets worse, because we painted the floors we moved the bedframe into the hallway, and things became even more cramped.

It also means when we end up doing DIY it all goes on in the hall and everything is stored in the boxroom as we don't have a garage to hide all our junk in and get up to the dirty tasks in.

I can't really complain, we made the choice to stay in the city when we bought this flat and we chose an area where we can only afford one bedroom. And most of the time we enjoy everything our local area has to offer. But sometimes like this week I look forward to a house of our own and space to craft and DIY without throwing the place into chaos.

Anyone got any tips for living through the chaos?

  1. Oh my goodness! I would die. This makes me so thankful that we have a house with plenty of rooms and space so that this doesn't happen.

    1. I know! I am incredibly jealous of all the big houses I see on the american blogs! Everything goes back in the weekend (I hope) so haven't had to cope for too long!! xox

  3. Hmmm, I totally get you. Our apartment is quite spacious (at least for Dutch standards) and I love it, but we have very little storage space. We have to make the space ourselves. I guess the best (and hardest) tip is to learn to live with less, to keep essentials, and to continually cleanse (we just rearranged the storage room, threw away a bunch of boxes and plastic bags that we were keeping just in case). Whenever we do buy something for the kitchen for instance we really have to think if we need it and where we´ll put it. I think it is a good thing to learn. We do not need all the stuff.
Good luck with the redecorating... the sacrifice is for a good cause and hopefully you will be done soon.
    Have a good week.

    1. Oh yeah we shouldn't complain, ours isn't too bad by Edinburgh standards, but it can be a challenge! R and I differ on our views on what storage, I would chuck everything out but he is more of a hoarder so it takes some negotiating!!

Nearly done now, and everything should be back in this week... phew!!

    2. Haha, yeah the negotiating, I omitted the part where I was a crying mess in the kitchen floor because I feel bad about the environment throwing away all that plastic bags (though we ended up taking them to the recycle container). In our case I am the hoarder and Mark is the one who would like to have a bed and a table as our only furniture (just kidding).

  4. Living in a construction-zone will make you mad! I am so relieved our house is more home now. But seeing the outcome of your room, the short-term chaos seems super worth it! Also, I'm obsessed with Breaking Bad!!! Haven't seen the 5th season yet and it's driving me bonkers.
